This study examined if similar social & psychiatric factors are associated with suicide attempts in community & clinical settings & whether the magnitude of effect is greater in clinical populations. 2 Australian case-control studies were used. The pattern of risk factors in both studies was similar, the magnitude of risk was usually greater in clinical cases. Greatest attributable fractions were unemployment & anxiety disorders in the community sample & unemployment & affective disorders in the clinical sample. (24 refs.)
