The incidence & circumstances of all suicides recorded during 1996-2002 that were reported to Mie Prefectural Police Headquarters in Japan were examined. In this letter to the editor, the authors report on an analysis of the background factors in 18 suicides among younger females (mean age 28.2 years). The statistically significant risk factors were found to be psychiatric disorders, main medical treatment in the department of psychiatry, outpatient treatment; unemployment, living with family, & a history of suicide attempts.
