This study analysed 640 suicides in Singapore during 2000-2001, compared these to previous years & in relation to demographic & socioeconomic factors as well as to the characteristics of a subgroup of victims with prior psychiatric illness. There was little change in suicide patterns but disproportionately higher numbers were recorded for the 25-34 & the 75-years & older age groups. 47 cases in 2001 & 74 cases in 2002 had a history of prior psychiatric illness. A statistically significant correlation between unemployment & incidence rates was noted. (48 refs.)
