The recognition that something affecting one family member will impact others in the family led to the development of family therapy. This article examines system theory, the differences between linear & circular thinking, family therapy, family therapy & suicidal behaviour among children & young people, & what research says about effective treatments. A clinical example of a 15-year-old girl who attempted suicide is used as illustration. It is concluded families should always be involved when young people harm themselves. (8 refs.)
