That schizophrenia has a better course & outcome in developing countries has become an axiom in international psychiatry. However, increasing research evidence indicates a far more complex picture. A literature review & tabulation of data from 23 longitudinal studies of schizophrenia outcomes, including suicide mortality, in 11 low- & middle-income countries was done. Outcomes varied across the studies & the evidence suggests a need to reexamine the conclusions of some previous studies. Additionally, assessment of outcomes should take excess mortality & suicide into account. (92 refs.)
