Mental Disorders, Suicide, and Deliberate Self Harm in Lesbian, gay and Bisexual People: a Systematic Review
National Institute for Mental Health in England
A systematic review of world literature was done to quantify the risk for mental disorders, substance misuse, suicide, suicide ideation, & deliberate self-harm in lesbian, gay, & bisexual people. 28 papers, published between 1997-2004, met inclusion criteria. Findings indicate lesbian, gay, & bisexual individuals are at significantly higher risk of mental disorder, suicide ideation, substance misuse, & deliberate self-harm than heterosexuals. An awareness of the mental health needs of this population should become a standard part of training for health & social work professionals. (122 refs.)
