Of the students who participated in local & state youth risk behavior surveillance surveys in 1991, 14-35% had thought seriously about attempting suicide; 9-22% had made a specific plan to attempt suicide; 5-12% had actually attempted suicide, & 1-5% made a suicide attempt that resulted in an injury or poisoning that required medical treatment. In all sites, females were more likely than males to report having thought seriously about attempting suicide, making a suicide plan, attempting suicide 1 or more times, & making a suicide attempt requiring medical attention.
