This study investigated patterns of premature mortality among young adult injection drug users in Vancouver. 22 participants enrolled in the Vancouver Injection Drug Users Study died prior to age 30 during the follow-up period. The leading observed cause of death among females was homicide & among males, suicide & overdose. Premature mortality was 13 & 54 times higher among young men & women who use injection drugs in Vancouver than among the general population in Canada. (32 refs.)
