A systematic search of major relevant databases was performed to investigate possible associations between phases of the menstrual cycle & suicidal behaviour. 44 relevant studies were identified, 13 pertaining to suicide, two pertaining to both attempted & completed suicide, 23 to suicide attempts, three to suicide attempts in those suffering from premenstrual syndrome, three to suicide ideation, & two to repetitive self-harming behaviours. A varity of methodologies were used & there were notable differences in the conclusions reached. Results suggest an association between the menstrual cycle & nonfatal suicidal behaviours. (82 refs.)
