This study identified correlates of suicide ideation & examined the hypothesis that injection drug users were more likely to report suicide ideation than noninjection drug users. 317 participants, age 15-30, who began using drugs within the past 5 yeas were recruited in Baltimore, Maryland between August 2000 & March 2002. The prevalence of suicide ideation was 27%. Injection drug users were more likely to report suicide ideation. Results suggest factors associated with injection drug users’ lifestyles & mental health status may account for their higher prevalence of suicide ideation. (25 refs.)
