This study compared the rate of suicide among Norwegian physicians, dentists, nurses, police officers, & theologians with the rate among other university graduates & the general population according to gender, age, & time period. Physicians still had a higher rate compared with other graduates & the general population. Suicide rates increased steeply by age among physicians & other graduates. The suicide rate among female nurses was also elevated, whereas police officers seemed to have an intermediate suicide risk. The rate among theologians was low. Rates in the 1990s were significantly lower than in the 1980s. (48 refs.)
