The enormous social changes seen in Japan in the past 40 years have been accompanied by the erosion of the traditional Japanese family structure, rising divorce rates, rising crime & violence among youth, & an epidemic of suicides, particularly among middle-aged men. Cultural practices & beliefs contributing to the high rate of suicide among the Japanese are explored in detail. The challenges & new possibilities for family counsellors in addressing the issues brought about by the social changes are reviewed. (42 refs.)
