This report presents data on fatal injuries among American children by ethnicity & mechanism of injury during 1999-2002. Trends in injury mortality are provided for 1982-2002. American Indian/Alaska Native children, age 10-19, had the highest rates of suicide & motor-vehicle traffic deaths. Suicide was less common among black adolescents compared to white adolescents. The continued development & evaluation of prevention programs is suggested, particularly in American Indian/Alaska Native & other communities at risk. (61 refs.)
