During a 3-year period, the charts of 109 adolescent psychiatric inpatients were retrospectively reviewed. 28 adolescents admitted because of recent suicide attempts were studied & 55 adolescents with at least 1 recent or past attempt were compared to others. The most common diagnosis was depressive disorder. There were significantly more girls than boys who attempted suicide. Attempts increased with age but this trend was not significant. The most common precipitating factor was school stress. 11 of 71 follow-up patients continued to manifest suicidal behaviours. (43 refs.)
