It was hypothesized the genes encoding monoamine oxidase A & cathecol-O-methyl transferase might contain genetic variation conferring increased risk for attempted suicide. 305 families with at least one member having bipolar disorder were genotyped. No association with history of suicide attempt was found either in the monoamine oxidase A polymorphisms or the Val 158 Met polymorphism. Findings suggest monoamine oxidase A & cathecol-0-methyl transferase genes may not influence suicidal behaviour in patients with bipolar disorder. (24 refs.)
