Suicide mortality in Norwegian peacekeepers who served during 1978-1995 was studied. General population data were used for comparison. A moderately, but significantly, increased standardized mortality ratio of 1.4 for suicide was found among the former peacekeepers. After adjusting for marital status, this ratio was reduced to insignificance. Various reasons for the peacekeepers’ increased risk of suicide are discussed. Recommended prevention strategies include improved personnel selection & psychosocial support for veterans & their families. (31 refs.)
