The author examines the views of 19th & 20th century philosophers & scientists on suicide & then looks at Norwegian & international legislation on suicide. The ideas of Schopenhauer, Kant, Nietzsche, Esquirol, Griesinger, Kraeplin, Durkheim, Sartre, & Camus are discussed. Attitudes toward suicide throughout Norwegian history are described briefly. The article concludes with an examination of Norwegian & international legislation on suicide & suicidal behaviours, with a particular mention of suicide & life insurance.
