A personal goal intervention program was offered to early retirees aged 50-65 with the objective of increasing their subjective well-being. A subsample of 21 participants with suicide ideation was identified. Experimental & control groups were compared on their answers to 16 goal & psychological well-being questionnaires. The 10 participants in the experimental group improved significantly more than the control group on hope, goal realization process, serenity, flexibility, & positive attitude toward retirement. Levels of depression & psychological distress significantly decreased. Results of this study could lead to an innovative way to help people with suicide ideation. (76 refs.)
