This article examines the characteristics of patients who repeatedly injure themselves. Possible underlying background & trigger factors are discussed. Suggestions are made on preventive & assessment procedures, as well as staff reactions & management strategies aimed to help patients deal with the overwhelming feelings that underlie self-injury.(69 refs.)(CH)
