In this letter to the editor, Goldney comments on an article by Burns et al (2005) on the management of deliberate self-harm in young people in which randomized controlled trials were selected for review. He suggests this approach misses some useful research, particularly reviews of what should be standard practice in emergency departments where the initial management of suicidal behaviours usually takes place. He briefly reviews two such studies. (3 refs.)
