Abstract
A Review of the Literature on Rural Suicide: Risk and Protective Factors, Incidence, and Prevention
Hirsch J K
This review examines the current body of literature on rural suicide & investigates differences between rural & urban suicide, including socioeconomic, psychological, & cultural variables. Prevention & intervention strategies specific to rural communities are discussed. Rural locale may create geographic, psychological, & sociocultural barriers to treatment of suicide. A better understanding of the role of rurality in the development & maintenance of suicidal thoughts & behaviours is needed. (210 refs.)
