This report is based on the responses of more than 4800 Aboriginal students who took part in province-wide youth health surveys in British Columbia in 1992, 1998, & 2003. Positive trends are noted as well as areas for improvement such as continuing high rates of suicide attempts and ideation. In the year before the 2003 survey, 22% of Aboriginal youth seriously considered suicide compared to 15% of non-Aboriginal students. 12% of Aboriginal youth attempted suicide compared to 6% of non-Aboriginal youth; 6% attempted once; 4% two or three times, & 2% attempted suicide four or more times. Risk & protective factors are discussed.
