Nine consecutive years of data from the National Health Interview Survey (1986-1994) were linked to the Multiple Cause of Death file through the National Death Index (1986-1997). Cox proportional hazard models examined how demographic, social, & health factors are related to the risk of suicide mortality. Individual level characteristics such as age, gender, marital status, family size, education, employment status, existing medical conditions, & veteteran status as well as contextual factors are related to suicide mortality risks.
