The mortality risk in mental illness for Nova Scotia patients in contact with psychiatric services or primary care was evaluated. The mortality rate was 1.74, with increased ratios for all major causes of death. A significant difference in death by suicide was seen in the mortality risk between inpatients & those attending private specialists. It is concluded mortality risk is increased in all psychiatric patients, not just those who have received inpatient treatment. (31 refs.)
