The authors collected data on all suicides between 1990-2000 from the office of the Chief Medical Examiner of New York City & assessed trends & correlates of firearm-related suicides. There were a total of 6,008 suicides, 1200 were firearm-related. There was a decrease in total suicides, total firearm suicides, & the proportion of firearm-related suicides. In multivariable modeling, characteristics associated with a greater likelihood of firearm sucide were being male, African American, residing in the outer boroughs, & use of cannabis. (35 refs.)
