The authors calculated crude event rates per 100,000 United States population by using census & fatality data. In 2001 medically treated, nonfatal intentional self-injury events were reported 2.5 times as often in Utah as in Maryland. Postinjury hospitalization rates were between 41 & 51% of all nonfatal events treated in the emergency department. However, when the emergency department rate surpassed 140 events per 100,000 population, hospitalization rates declined. (3 refs.)
