The Impact of Suicide on Morbidity and Mortality in the Population of Itabira

This article examines why suicide rates in Itabira, Brazil are higher than those in the entire Brazilian population between 1990-2001. Data was collected from the Mortality Information System & the Hospital Admission Authorization System. Results show that death by suicide was more common in men; however, suicide attempts were more frequent among housewives & students. The author concludes prevention programs & treatment facilities should be put in place within the region. (16 refs.)(CH)
