A records analysis was done of patients at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rehoboth, Namibia who exhibited the risk factors &/or were diagnosed & treated for suicide or attempted suicide in 2001. A total of 45 individuals were identified. 51% of these were admitted, 7% were referred out, & 42% were treated as outpatients. Suicide & attempted suicide were not commonly used terms by healthcare providers. Emergency care for patients who attempted suicide was apparently adequate but the lack of a clear, coordinated multidisciplinary management approach to the survivors of a suicide attempt is noted as a serious gap.
