The aims of this study were to investigate the risk of death & time trends from external causes & to evaluate the significance of the effects of age, period, & birth cohort on suicide mortality among middle-aged men during 1971-2000 in Lithuania. Over this time, 2841 men died; 21 by suicide. Of all the variables included in the model, only family status & occupation were associated with the risk of death by suicide. The risk of death by suicide was significantly higher among divorced & widowed subjects as compared to married men. The lowest rates of suicide in 1986-1990 & the sharp increase in 1991-2000 could be attributed to period-related effects. (33 refs.)
