This study sought to determine the temporal risk for postpartum suicide attempts & to assess whether maternal complications & adverse infant outcomes were associated with risk for such attempts. A case-control study compared 520 women hospitalized for a postpartum suicide attempt with 2204 control women not hospitalized for a postpartum suicide attempt in Washington State from 1987-2001. Logistic regression evaluated whether maternal complications & adverse infant outcome were associated with hospitalization for a suicide attempt within 1 year after delivery. Maternal complications were not associated with hospitalizations for suicide attempts in the year following delivery. However, fetal death or the death of an infant in the first year after delivery was strongly associated with a suicide attempt. (20 refs.)
