Conwell Y~~Cholette J~~Duberstein P R
As many as 1 out of 4 persons with schizophrenia dies by suicide, some even while under psychiatric care. Young adulthood to midlife is the age range of greatest risk in this population. A past history of suicide attempts is common among victims, as are affective symptomatology & feelings of hopelessness & demoralization. Active paranoia may increase risk whereas negative symptoms may decrease the risk of self-destructive acts. Many suicides occur during hospitalization or shortly after discharge. Methodical assessment of suicide ideation & aggressive treatment with psychological, social, & pharmacologic approaches are vital aspects of patient management. (100 refs.)
