Available data suggest suicide deaths in Asia may account for the majority of suicides that occur in the world every year. This editorial discusses the limitations of Asian statistics, variations within rates of suicide in Asian countries, & trends within Asia. Religious & cultural influences, gender differences, mental illness, acute life stresses, & means of suicide specific to the Asian context are discussed. The editorial concludes with a brief discussion of future prevention strategies & research needs. (12 refs.)
