A longitudingal prospective case-register study was conducted from 1995-2002 to describe the incidence of & factors associated with suicide in Ilam, Iran. 2512 people died by suicide during the study period. More women than men attempted or died by suicide. Rates were highest among 20-29-year-olds & decreased with increasing age. Suicidal behaviour was associated with higher levels of education. Higher rates of attempts & completions were found among married people than those who had never been married. (45 refs.)
