This article discusses how patients who have comorbid depression & anxiety present primary care physicians with a diagnostic as well as a treatment challenge. Identifying these patients is essential as they have a higher suicide rate than those with depression alone. The key to accurate diagnosis is the physicianÕs high index of suspicion, the use of appropriate rating scales for assessment, including patientsÕ self-rating scales, & team approach. (40 refs)
