The diary left by Cesare Pavese covering 15 years prior to his suicide is examined. The noteworthy pattern is that mention of failure with women was immediately followed in his diary by denigration of his literary work. Other features of his life, such as the loss of his father when he was six, are also discussed. (13 refs.)(CH)
