This article discusses suicide within the Muslim nations. Suicide rates appear to be lower in the Muslim religion than in those of other religions. However, attempted suicide rates do not appear to be lower in Muslims than that of non-Muslims. Reasons for the low rate of dying by suicide are reviewed, including differences in values & socio-economic status within a variety of different countries. The author concludes more research is needed in order to understand the characteristics of suicidal behaviour. (128 refs.)(CH)
