This study analysed the epidemiology of suicidal behaviour in Dutch general practices in order to find possible clues for prevention. Between 1983-2003, the annual numer of suicides & suicide attempts decreased by 50%. Living alone was a risk factor for suicide & living in a household of 3 or more persons was a relative risk for attempted suicide. General practitioners recalled having discussed suicide ideation in only 7% of the cases, & in retrospect estimated they had forseen suicide or suicide attempts in 31% & 22% of the case, respectively, if there had been contact in the preceding month.
