This study compared violent injury death reporting by the state wide Medical Examiner & Vital Statistics Office surveillance systems in Oklahoma. Altogether 776 violent injury deaths were identified including 519 suicides, 248 homicides, & 9 unintentional firearm deaths. The Medical Examiner system over-reported homicides & the Vital Statistics system under-reported homicides & suicides & over-reported unintentional firearm injury deaths. Both the Vital Statistics & Medical Examiner systems contain valuable data & when combined can work to provide violent injury death information. (55 refs)
