The suicide rate for each state, 1959-1961, was obtained from Massey (1967) & the longitude of each state was defined in 3 ways: the longitude of the western-most part of the state, the longitude of the eastern-most part of the state, & the longitude of the state capital. This article discusses the general trend of deaths by suicide on the 48 states of the United States of America to be higher in the west than in the east. (4 refs)
