The psychological condition of 3,609 students who survived the Marmara (Turkey) earthquake in 1999 was investigated. The prevalence of suicidal tendency/thought was 16.7%. Suicidal thoughts were more prevalent in students who were injured or whose relatives had been injured seriously enough to require medical attention. Ideation was also more prevalent in students whose relatives died or who had extensive damage or destruction to their family homes or property. Ideation was lower among females than males. (19 refs.)
