A study of 439 patients, ages 12-17, from 13 U.S. clinics between 2000 & 2003 was conducted to investigate the efficacy of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) & medication, alone or together, for depressed adolescents. Rates of response for fluoxetine with CBT were 71%; fluoxetine alone, 60.6%; CBT alone, 43.2%; & placebo, 34.8%. When treating depressed older patients screening in the primary care setting is 1 valid suicide preventive intervention. Also, better management of physical disabilities & chronic medical illnesses, & attention to underlying & pervasive social risk factors. (LC)
