This study compared the prevalence of mental health disorders & the use of professional help by area of residence, & sex; & to determine whether the differences parallel differences in suicide rates. Higher suicide rates were evident for men in rural (40.4 per 100000) & remote (51.7 per 100000) populations compared with metropolitan (31.8 per 100000) populations. Men with a mental disorder from non-metropolitan areas were less likely than those from other areas to seek professional help for a mental health disorder. (LC) (27 refs)
