1942 nurses were randomly selected from the May 1991 Victorian Nursing Council register to which questionnaires were sent to investigate whether terminally or incurably ill patients request they be allowed, or helped, to die & whether nurses believe they should be involved in legalized active euthanasia. Of nurses who had been asked by a patient to hasten death, 5% had taken active steps to do so without being asked by a doctor. Almost all of the 25% who had been asked by a doctor to end a patientÕs life had done so. 78% of nurses favoured a change in legalizing euthanasia. (LC) (2 refs)
