This report presents the findings of a national study on suicide commissioned by the Chief Executive Officers of the health boards of Ireland. Information was sought on all suicides that occurred nationally in 1997 & 1998. Based on the collected data, the epidemiology of suicide in Ireland is described. The findings confirm many of those discussed in previous studies & provide additional information pertinent to prevention strategies. Important target areas for reducing the rate of suicide in Ireland are identified. (45 refs)
