The author highlights the absence of first-hand accounts of suicidality, what he calls the original voice, as the major weakness in current efforts to understand & prevent suicide. In this paper he explores the issues of self, soul & spirit in an academic context to show that the blindness of suicidology to these critical issues is no accidental oversight. In doing so, he argues that spirituality & the original voice should no longer be excluded from the agenda of suicidology. To remedy this, he proposes a reconciliation between science & spirituality, based on the integral approach of Ken Wilber. (19 refs)
