This report provides an overview of suicide among the Inuit in Greenland. Specifically, the author examines the relationship between the social transition of the Greenlandic society & the high prevalence of suicide since the mid 1970s. An update on the epidemiology of suicide is provided, along with an overview of its general characteristics. The relationship between postwar-modernization & increasing suicide rates is discussed with reference to sociodemographic indicators, & possible explanations for this increase are presented. Implications for intervention & prevention are explored. (56 refs)
