The authors explore the risks & benefits of treating suicidal patients in managed care systems. Particular features of U.S. HMOs & PPOs that could conceivably reduce member suicide rates are identified, & the quality of managed care practices are compared to those of unmanaged care settings. Specific limitations that threaten to prevent suicidal patients from receiving adequate care in managed care settings are highlighted, & recommendations are made for clinicians treating suicidal patients in this environment.
