Using his own case experience, the author highlights several barriers to obtaining appropriate medical care for suicidal patients that can be directly attributed to HMO policy, including the refusal to authorize hospitalization. He draws on the novel “Atlas Shrugged” by Ayn Rand to highlight the moral implications of HMO practice.
