The authors examine how causal factors for suicide interact profoundly with the contextual system of values, traditions, & sources of support available to individuals in different cultures. Rising rates of elderly suicide in many Latin & Asian countries are contrasted with those in Anglo-Saxon countries, where rates are declining. Culturally specific protective & risk factors are identified. Implications for prevention are discussed. (25 refs)
