In this paper, the authors review the postmortem brain studies on depressed individuals that have focused on the monoaminergic pathways. Earlier studies examined neurotransmitter levels, their metabolites, & receptors. More recent studies measured signal transduction intermediates, whereas current studies are examining transcription factors & the regulation of gene expression. Possible relationships between suicide & the neuropathology of depression are examined throughout. (54 refs)
